What is Group Health Insurance?

Group health insurance is exactly what it sounds like, health coverage for a group of people. This coverage is usually provided by a company for its full-time employees and their families, but it can also be provided by labor unions, professional associations, advocacy groups, and other organizations.

Generally speaking, a certain number of eligible employees of a group or organization, usually around 70%, must opt into the group coverage before a policy is issued. However, we will write your group health even if it's 1 of 20 people in the office who want coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act, a small business with under 50 employees is not required to offer health insurance coverage to its employees.

The Benefits Group Health Insurance

There are a number of benefits to a group health plan for all parties involved. For the insurance company issuing the policy, there is generally less risk assumed. The insurance provider also has much lower customer acquisition and administration costs.

A group plan also provides employer and employee benefits.

Lower Cost

A group health insurance plan is generally going to cost less for an employee in terms of deductibles and premiums than something they could find on their own.

Potential Tax Benefit

Small businesses with 2-25 employees could be entitled to the Health Insurance Premium Tax Credit.

Employee Morale

To no one's surprise, most employees like having health insurance policies. Providing a quality health insurance plan will make employees happier, leading to improved productivity and reduced turnover.
